But, one of the reasons the region is so special is that it is totally unpretentious with many of the wineries being small, family-run operations. Often the staff in the tasting room includes the winery owner and winemaker. You can’t get much more up close and personal than that! Wine tasting fees are also very reasonable; averaging around $4.00 for tasting 5-6 wines and often a portion of the tasting fee can be applied to a purchase.

Cayuga County has eleven wineries concentrated near Cayuga Lake, with one winery on the Great Lake Ontario. The lakes protect the vineyards from the harshest part of winter, and the cool breezy summers create near ideal conditions for grape growing.

In addition to wineries, Cayuga County and the Finger Lakes Region have a growing craft brewing industry including microbreweries, brewpubs, and specialty craft beer markets. The region is fortunate to have access to fresh, clean water; locally grown hops, malted barley and other ingredients that make first rate craft brews. Cayuga County has four breweries, each with a unique style and focus, featuring everything from Pumpkin Beer to farmhouse ales and many other varieties in between.
